What is the CS Mentoring
Program?
The Mentor Program was initiated for incoming CS students.
This program pairs up a class of CS majors with a group
of CS faculty and senior students, giving new students
an initial contact within the department and a point of
contact when questions arise. The mentors are
available to answer any questions and concerns that the
students may have regarding academic life. This
helps the new students get more information about their
major area by informal and friendly communication with
their mentors.
In
addition, the Mentoring Program was created to inspire
and encourage CS students to continue their study of
Computer Science, and to learn about careers in which
Computer Science plays a role.
The Purpose
The CS Mentoring Program
addresses the transition new students go through when
coming to the Computer Science graduate program at
Virginia State University. To ensure that every
incoming student has a smooth transition, all new
students are paired with faculty and/or a current
student mentor. Mentors help answer any questions
and concerns a new student may have regarding their
academic life.
Faculty Mentors
Become a Student Mentor
We are always looking for highly
motivated computer science students to become mentors for our students. The
purpose of the CS mentoring program is to help new students adjust to VSU
and our Math & CS department.
As a mentor, you are not just a
tutor. You are there to be a friend, an experienced VSU student, and an
approachable resource. You are there to help your mentee get involved in the
CS community. If you are interested in
enriching the CS department by being a mentor, please email
dhaile@vsu.edu.
